2010 Rendezvous Set for
27-29 August 2010
The
first Backcountry rendezvous held in America
was conducted along the
Green River
in what is now Wyoming
in 1820. Fur trappers and traders gathered in a big bend of the river in
the spring after a hard winter of solitude and pursuing the elusive but
valuable beaver. Much whisky was consumed; many lies told; and many feats
of derring-do were reenacted. The gathering was so popular it was held
every spring for decades – until most of the beaver were trapped out of
The West – but in recent years many who carry the passion of America’s frontier days have conjured up various ways to relive those halcyon
days of yore.
In keeping with that spirit of The West, the Back
Country Horsemen of New Mexico are planning the 2010 Rendezvous for
August 27, 28, 29 at Fort Stanton, NM. The schedule of activities is
still being developed, but past Rendezvous have included a potluck dinner
aon Friday night with
a Leave No Trace (LNT) demonstration;
trail rides on Saturday and Sunday; a catered Saturday
dinner and campfire; geocaching competitions; mounted orienteering; and backcountry
horsemanship clinics and skills demonstrations.
Members are asked to bring only animals in good health
that have had all shots and vaccinations.
